Welcome to the Early Animation Wiki
The Early Animation Wiki is a collaboration between faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates at the University of Toronto. It is a project designed to gather and share information on the early years of film animation, with an initial focus on the United States. It offers biographical information on animators and historical data on animation studios, as well as an extensive bibliography of sources on animation and related topics.
Begun in January of 2008, the wiki’s main goal is to map out the path of early animators’ careers as they moved from studio to studio, and to build a database of information about individual animators, studios, and cartoons in the early days of animation. At the same time, we hope to create an interactive environment that moves beyond the walls of the academy, to create a site where scholars, collectors, and fans can share their knowledge and passion about animation. We also hope to add video to the site in the near future.
As we get the Early Animation Wiki up and running and work out the bugs, we are keeping access somewhat restricted. We hope that once we have it up and running well, we can open up its administration like other wikis. In the meantime, if you are interested in becoming a contributor or collaborating editor for the wiki, please contact the administrator at admin@rarebit.org. Please indicate whether you are an independent scholar, collector, animator, or if you are affiliated with a specific institution. Also, please let us know what your interests are.
To get started, feel free to browse the site for information about specific animators, data on studios, or books and articles. Please remember that this site is under development, and that we are entering data as fast as we can. We look forward to your feedback.
Welcome!
