This is a study of American popular culture. The author analyzes various forms of both passive and active leisure activities of Americans, raging from TV, science fiction to football. In this book, the author shows that the rise of popular arts and media is a rival to manufacturing industries in the United States, and at the same time argues against attempts to devaluate or censor the popular arts.
