It is shown in this article that the years from 1945 to 1954 contributed much to the civil rights movement even though there were no outspoken campaigns for reform during this time. The author argues that novels, stage plays, and films dramatized issues of racial injustice even as they drew on racial concerns sensitized by revelations from the Nazi death camps. Prominent black Americans, like Ethel Waters, Jackie Robinson, and Ralph Ellison, also helped discredit old stereotypes.
